South CarolinaAn entrance becomes an anthem
At Williams-Brice Stadium, the first notes of “Also sprach Zarathustra” turn waiting into a shared countdown.Anticipation is the tradition.
The entrance is built around a familiar piece of music, but its force comes from timing: the crowd knows what the opening notes mean, knows what is about to happen, and rises before the team appears.
South Carolina traces the idea to former quarterback and longtime radio analyst Tommy Suggs, who wanted a stadium entrance with the dramatic lift he had seen in an Elvis Presley show. The band tried the music in 1981; the current recorded presentation followed a sound-system upgrade in 1983.
