The field gets wider without making every path equal. Better regular seasons buy fewer elimination games, five conference champions receive protected access, bowls keep a national stage, and the final eight return to campuses.

These dates make the sequence concrete. They are a worked calendar—not an approved schedule—and would require annual negotiation.
- 01Rivalry Week
The regular season ends with access, hosting, and both bye lines still in play.
- 02Titles + selection
Conference champions are decided Friday and Saturday; both postseason fields publish Sunday.
- 03Campus opening round
The four highest-ranked teams still in this round host the four lowest. Four winners reach the first redraw.
- 04CFP Bowl Weekend
The eight single-bye teams enter. Twelve teams fill six premier bowls.
- 05Christmas pause
No games in either national tournament.
- 06Campus quarterfinals
Nos. 1 and 2 enter. Four higher seeds host, then the bracket locks.
- 07Campus semifinals
The locked bracket produces two campus games.
- 08National championship
The final two meet at a preselected neutral site.

The top four by résumé host. The other four enter on the road.
Champion protection changes entry—not the published order. Five selected conference champions, including at least one outside the Power Four, receive a place and at least a single bye. A lower-ranked champion can move into the bye group, but its underlying seed stays visible and controls both redraws.
The count that clears up the format
How 18 becomes one.
“Teams remaining” and “teams playing next” are different numbers because the top two wait through two rounds.

The four campus winners join ten bye teams.

Two redraws, then lock
The best survivor always gets the lowest survivor.
- After the campus round
Combine the four winners with the eight single-bye teams, restore underlying résumé order, and pair highest against lowest through six games.
- After Bowl Weekend
Add Nos. 1 and 2 to the six winners, reorder all eight by underlying seed, and pair highest versus lowest again.
- At the quarterfinals
Lock the bracket. Quarterfinal winners follow their assigned side through the semifinals and title game.
What it preserves
More consequence—not simply more football.

A separate national path
The National Tournament runs beside the CFP.
Sixteen eligible non-Power Four teams outside the CFP play a campus-based tournament with a neutral-site final. Its field locks on Selection Sunday; no CFP loser drops in. It is a championship of its own, not a consolation bracket.
